Dr. Sara Riley - Medical Director

Dr. Sara Riley MB.BS. DRCOG

Dr. Riley has been a NHS general practitioner for the past 15 years.

Dr Sara Riley is well aware of the psychological aspects of hair loss through her work as a NHS family doctor in south-west London.

She encountered her first patient with trichotillomania in the mid-1990s, which led to her interest in female hair loss conditions.

She is the medical director to the Hair Loss Management Academy (HMA) which aims to work with doctors to ensure that women with hair loss have a range of options available to them to deal with their condition.

Her objective is to ensure that through a multi-disciplinary approach the medical, psychological and practical aspects of hair loss are properly managed.

She is working with the Hair Loss Management Academy to develop a formal training structure for designers to enable them to work specifically with women with hair loss.

She is also involved in research looking at the psychological affects of hair loss and the benefits of a variety of management options.

The purpose of the HMA is to ensure that no medical cause for any hair loss condition is overlooked and that the appropriate referrals to the NHS or private consultants are made when necessary.

‘There is a need to deal with hair loss in a sensitive and appropriate manner. I believe that the HMA enables women to make informed choices about the management of their hair loss.’
