What is trichotillomania?
The word Trichotillomania was first used by a French Dermatologist named Hallopeau in 1889 to describe the condition that he observed in some of his patients who had an irresistible urge to pull out their hair.
It is now defined as an impulse control disorder, although this definition may not be terribly helpful and although it is not classically an obsessive compulsive disorder it may be useful to think of it as related. It causes people to pull hair from head, eyebrows and other parts of the body resulting in noticeable hair loss.
